The First Step to Happiness: Choosing Your Company Wisely

Hello everyone, as we embark on a new year, it’s an opportune time to reflect on the pursuit of happiness. According to the wisdom of Lord Buddha, true happiness stems not from external beauty or pleasing sounds but from our own actions. It is the result of good deeds that, in turn, yield positive outcomes and grant us a sense of fulfillment.

Lord Buddha likened the journey to happiness to a staircase, each step representing an aspect of our actions and choices. Today, let’s delve into the initial step on this staircase: the importance of avoiding association with bad people.

As the saying goes, “Show me your friends, and I’ll show you your future.” The people we surround ourselves with play a pivotal role in shaping our character and influencing our behavior. Lord Buddha’s teachings emphasize the impact of our companions on our path to happiness.

Consider the stories in the past about mango tree which has such a delicious fruit everyone was craving for it, it belonged to the king, and the neighboring kingdom desired it fervently. Unable to satisfy their craving, they eventually decided to destroy the tree to prevent anyone else from enjoying its fruits.

In a subtle and cunning move, the gardener was dispatched to destroy the mango tree didn’t resort to obvious methods like cutting or poisoning. Instead, he planted a neem tree near the mango, causing their roots to entwine and corrupting the taste of the mango. The king, perplexed by the sudden bitterness of the once-delicious fruit, sought the advice of a wise man who identified the problem lying in the corrupted roots. Once the neem tree was removed, the mango tree flourished once again, bearing delicious fruit.

This story serves as a poignant metaphor for our lives. If even a mango tree, devoid of consciousness, can be corrupted by its association with a bitter neem tree, how much more susceptible are we, with our minds and emotions, to the influence of negative company?

To lead a fulfilling life, the first step is to distance ourselves from bad influences. The people we choose as friends can subtly shape our thoughts, actions, and attitudes. Like the king removing the neem tree to restore the mango tree’s sweetness, we too must identify and distance ourselves from those whose negativity threatens to taint our lives.

In conclusion, as we embark on this new year, let’s heed the timeless wisdom of Lord Buddha. Recognize the profound impact of your associations on your journey to happiness. Choose your companions wisely, for they can either uplift you or, like the neem tree, corrupt the taste of your life. By taking this first step and distancing ourselves from negativity, we pave the way for a more joyful and fulfilling existence.
