On Saturday, 24 February 2024, Cape Town Meditation Centre organized the lighting up candle ceremony due to Magha Puja day.
The ceremony was held at 4 pm. – 6.30 pm. This ceremony consists of three parts which are taking five precepts, meditation sessions, and candlelight procession. The ceremony started with paying respect to the triple gem. After that, the master of ceremonies Leaded to ask for five precepts. Next, the representatives said the candle offering word and offer the candle to the presiding monk. Then the monk gives some sermons.
The presiding monk spoke about the principle teaching (Ovadapatimokkha), which the Lord Buddha gave to monks who will spread peace and happiness to the world. This teaching consists of three parts: ideology, principles, and methods. These teachings can be adapted and applied to our daily lives.
Ideology:
- Patience is necessary.
- Goals must be clear.
- Solve problems with kindness.
Principles:
- Abandon all forms of evil.
- Do good deeds with readiness.
- Purify one’s mind.
Methods:
- Do not harm anyone.
- Do not injure others.
- Cultivate good behavior.
- Practice moderation in consumption.
- Stay in peaceful places, away from harmful things.
- Keep the mind calm and serene.
We should reflect on ourselves based on the three principles that the Lord Buddha taught in the principle teaching. We need to examine where we stand, what we are doing, and whether our actions align with the principles provided by the Lord Buddha. This process involves adjusting our thoughts, direction, and behavior to align with our goals, ultimately leading to happiness and success.
Next, meditation session, the monk guides everyone to meditate for 1 hour. Then, the presiding monk lit up the candle and follow by the participants as the symbol of spreading peace to the whole world. Finally, the participants are caring the lanterns and walking around the building to remember the Triple Gem, reflect on oneself and bring one mind to be one with the inner peace.
