In meditation, staying relaxed and calm is key. But there are two main obstacles that can disrupt that peaceful state of mind.
The first is frustration. It’s like a wrecking ball that suddenly smashes through your sense of calm. It hits hard, but thankfully, it doesn’t last long. When you feel frustrated or dissatisfied, it quickly destroys the peace and happiness you’ve built up, just like a wrecking ball tearing down a building.
The second obstacle is pleasure. It’s more like rust, slowly eating away at your inner peace. This happens when your mind clings to things outside of you, like a beautiful view, delicious food, a pleasant smell, a lovely song, or a soft touch. These distractions may feel good, but they pull your attention away from stillness. Unlike frustration, which comes and goes quickly, pleasure quietly erodes your sense of true contentment over time. You might start to mistake these outside pleasures for real happiness, and as a result, you lose interest in meditating, which makes it harder to find lasting peace.
To avoid these obstacles, we need to practice meditation regularly and in the right way. Whenever you feel frustrated or captivated by something outside, notice it and gently let it go. You might even recite a mantra during the day to keep your mind calm and focused.
By practicing like this, over time, you’ll reach a deep inner peace that nothing else can compare to.
