How to keep your peace, not just on the cushion but throughout the day.

Greeting everyone. I’m Monk Sun.

Let me start by asking:
Who here has meditated every day in the past month? Half of the month? A week? That’s great to see.

Meditation is something we have to keep practicing. Why?
Because the world around us — our jobs, our responsibilities, our families — all pull our minds outward. When the mind drifts away from the body, we begin to collect impurities: stress, irritation, restlessness. These make our lives heavy, even if we don’t realize it.

But when we meditate, the body and mind reunite. Slowly, impurities are cleared out. The mind becomes still. You begin to feel peace — not from something outside, but from within.
You feel light, like you’re walking around with an empty, clear head.

That’s what we aim for in daily life: to keep that empty-headed, peaceful feeling, even after we open our eyes.

🔄 Two Types of Meditation

My teacher Laung Por Dhammajayo once told me:

“You only need to meditate twice a day — when you close your eyes, and when you open them.”

You already know how to meditate with eyes closed. Today, I’d like to share how to meditate with your eyes open — how to live with a meditative mind throughout the day.

🪷 Three Methods for Daily Meditation

1. Surround Yourself with a Feeling of Comfort
Imagine a soft, gentle feeling surrounding your body — like lying in your own cozy bed.
Don’t imagine pictures. Don’t think. Just feel.
Let that comfort expand and wrap around you as you walk, talk, or work.
This method helps you stay light and joyful all day long.

2. Be Aware of What You’re Doing (Sati)
Bring mindfulness (sati) into every action.
When drinking water, know that you’re drinking.
When walking, know that you’re walking.
Awareness connects you to the present and keeps your mind from wandering off.

3. Bring Your Mind Back to the Center of Your Body
Feel a point at the center of your head — like a bright crystal.
Gently touch this point with your awareness. Don’t visualize, just feel.
This is helpful for overthinkers. If you do it regularly, the mind will eventually return to its true home — the center of your body. And when it rests there, you will feel true stillness and happiness.

🌱 Why Daily Meditation Matters

If you only meditate during sitting, your progress will reset every time you open your eyes.
Like reaching level 5 in a game, and then dropping back to minus 100 when life distracts you.

But if you live meditatively throughout the day, your progress stays. Maybe it drops a little, but not too far. When you sit again, you go even deeper.
And when you go deep enough, you’ll see that the world is empty — nothing outside compares to the happiness within.

That’s why meditation should be your first priority. Not just something you do, but how you live.

☀️ Becoming a Happy Human

With continuous practice:

  • Your thoughts will calm.
  • Your emotions will soften.
  • Bad habits will fade.
  • A clear, bright version of you will shine through.

Eventually, you’ll live with no more negative emotions or thoughts — only peace, only happiness. You become what I call a “happy human.” That’s what my teacher wants for everyone. That’s the purpose of spreading meditation to the world.

And when many people find this inner peace, world peace becomes possible.
