Discover the Ancient Practice of Base Walking Meditation

For over a century, practitioners have followed the meditation techniques taught by Luang Pu Sodh, a revered Thai meditation master. His unwavering commitment to inner stillness led him to a profound realization—the mind must come to rest at a single focal point within the body to attain true clarity and insight. This discovery became the foundation of a structured practice known as Base Walking Meditation.

The Pathway of the Mind

Luang Pu Sodh found that seeing, remembering, thinking, and knowing must all converge at a single location within—the seventh base at the center of the body. This location serves as the origin of awareness, the point where the mind transitions between wakefulness and sleep. By focusing here, one can cultivate deep inner peace and insight.

Understanding the Seven Bases

In Base Walking Meditation, the mind moves methodically through seven internal bases:

  1. Nostril Opening – Left side for women, right side for men.
  2. Inner Corner of the Eye – Where tears form; left for women, right for men.
  3. Center of the Head – At the same level as the inner corners of the eyes.
  4. Roof of the Mouth – The spot where food might get caught.
  5. Throat – Just above the Adam’s apple.
  6. Abdomen (Navel Level) – Where two imaginary threads intersect at a pinpoint-sized center.
  7. Two Finger-Widths Above Base 6 – This is the true center of the mind, the ultimate resting place for deep meditation.

While bases 1 to 6 form the mental pathway, base 7 is the destination—where the mind should remain still and at ease.

How to Practice Base Walking Meditation

If you struggle with distractions during meditation, try this method:

  1. Visualize a Clear Sphere – Imagine a bright, radiant sphere moving from base 1 to base 7 and then back again.
  2. Mentally Recite a Mantra – At each base, softly repeat Samma Arahang three times.
  3. Stay Relaxed and Natural – Let the motion feel effortless. If visualization is difficult, simply sense the movement.
  4. Refocus When Distracted – If the mind wanders, gently bring it back to the practice without frustration.

As the mind gradually becomes still at base 7, let it settle naturally, allowing deeper levels of clarity and inner peace to unfold.
