On December 21st, our meditation group in Cape Town Meditation Centre celebrated World Meditation Day. This date, significant for the Solstice, represents a spiritual “turning point”—a perfect moment to transition from the busyness of the year into a state of deep, internal stillness.
The Philosophy Our session was guided by the principle that our internal quality of mind directly affects the environment around us. A teaching monk teaches that a “Celebration of Meditation” is the most effective way to foster harmony in our communities.
The Practice Participants were guided through a 60-minute session focusing on the Middle Way technique. Key elements of the practice included:
- Physical Alignment: Relaxing the body to create a hollow and transparent internal space.
- The Seventh Base: Bringing the mind to rest at the center of the body, two finger-width above the navel.
- Mental Clarity: Using the visualization of a “Bright Clear Sphere” and the mantra “Samma Arahang” to maintain focus and purity of mind.
We concluded with 45 minutes of silence, allowing the collective peace to expand from our hearts to the rest of the world. We are grateful to all who attended and contributed to this positive vibration.
“When we still our minds together, we create a positive vibration that can spread from our hearts to our community, and eventually to the whole world.”
